ABSOLUTMAID©  OPERATING MANUAL

New York: Great Jones Press, 1990 4 ¼ x11 in; 11 x 28cm ,8 pp

The Absolutmaid, a unique work, mixes Swedish wheat vodka with Indian tonic water. The Absolutmaid (see photo left) pays tribute to the beautiful Anita Ekberg, whose physiognomy is the passport to the ultimate pleasures obtainable through the repetitive consumption of Absolut vodka. Ekberg’s image is a film still taken from Fellini’s La Dolce Vita: wearing nothing but a black lace negligée she is interviewed by thirty foreign correspondents. In the humble, but supremely well-informed, opinion of the manufacturer, Anita Ekberg, Nordic goddess, is the patron saint of all honorable vodka drinkers.

THE GLOVERS' REPOSITORY: THE TENACIOUSNESS OF SUBTERFUGE

New York: Christine Burgin. (distributed by Artbook D.A.P.), 2016

5 x 10.5 in.57 color photos, 107 b/w photos, 112 pp

The Glovers’ Repository tells the stories of 24 characters who either practiced deception or were themselves its unwitting victims. From Mary Toft (who claimed to have given birth to a rabbit) to King Zog (who survived 55 assassination attempts), the characters are all legends in their own right. Their lives are related with characteristic wit and are well documented with photographs. This book was inspired by a large-scale installation, a vitrine containing 24 gloves, one for each character. Each glove rotated slowly via a mechanism based on the workings of Big Ben. The book is bound so that, when it is fully opened, two small books of the characters’ stories are revealed.

CINEMASCOPIA MANUAL

New York: Great Jones Press, 2004 4 ¼ x11 in.; 11 x 28cm, 8pp

This manual describes the Cinemascopia, a precision optical mechanism, concealed within a bottle of Punt e Mes, the primary catalyst within Sinfonia Torinese. The Cinemascopia captures the illusory nature of Sinfonia Torinese—the incantation of fourteen majestic songbirds, cushioned in the dulcet tones of Cabiria—manifested through a small segment of Super 8 film, cut to correspond to the total audio composition of the avarian symphony. The 206 frames in the film loop present a montage of the first performance of Sinfonia Torinese, which took place at 24 via Mazzini on September 21, 2004. Naturally, this b/w document lacks sound: it is solely a silver nitrite positive. (The sound is present in the Prelude Series Bird edition.) Edition of 30 + 3AP; signed and numbered

Helle Nice: Speed Queen is companion to Nino Farina: Speed King. This work comprises two glass domes supported by a metal armature that attaches to the wall. The kidskin c. 1930 glove of Helle Nice seen within this glass case is manipulated on the spindle of a speedometer to rotate at the speed of her fastest lap (XXX)and her greatest triumph, achieved in December 1929 at the Autodrome de Montlhéry. It was activated in its 2015–2018 presentation at Duane Park, New York’s premier Burlesque club, by the presence of dancers, a tribute to her former profession.
